Trying To Trace My Family Tree

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I know, I was supposed to be back to regular posting by now but I have a good excuse. I have found a new addictive and expensive habit.

And no, it’s not illegal! I have been trying to trace my family tree.

Having lost my parents and grandparents when I was in my mid twenties, I never really knew much about my family tree. Then recently while my sister was packing, she came across an old newspaper clipping announcing my mum’s parent’s 50th wedding anniversary, giving the year of marriage and where the ceremony was held.

I decided then and there to spend some time and money trying to find my ancestry family tree.

With my mum’s parents marriage details, I found a listing on the NSW birth, death and marriage online index which gave me a registration number. The wedding certificate gave me my Grandparent’s age at marriage, place of birth and their parent’s names.

With this information, the search for my family tree really took off. So far I have spent about $160 on certificates from England and signing up to genealogy sites to view census records but I think it is well worth it if you are serious about tracing your family tree.

I am so addicted to genealogy, I am thinking of doing a Diploma in Family Historical Studies. The Diploma is undertaken over 2-3 years with a minimum study time of 2 years and a maximum of 3. There are no structured lessons, regular assignments to complete or lectures to attend. This sounds perfect for me!

If you live in Australia and would like to try and trace your family tree and need a little help, leave a comment or use the contact me form and I will see if I can help.
